Bicycle Safety

Which side of the street should I ride on?

You should ride on the right side, with the flow of traffic.

Is it okay to ride on sidewalks in the city?

You can ride on sidewalks in the City of Shawano, but we recommend that you walk your bike in the busy areas like Main Street. When you do ride on the sidewalk, you must yield the right of way to pedestrians. This means that it is your responsibility to watch out for pedestrians and they don't have to watch out for you.

Do I have to register my bike?

If you live in the City of Shawano you must register your bike at the Police Department. The cost is $5.00, and the license is good forever. If you get a new bike, you can transfer the license to the new bike by coming into the Police Department and providing us with the information about your new bike.

Do I have to stop at stop signs when I'm riding my bike?
YES. You must obey all signs when riding a bike, just like the drivers of cars.

Do I have to wear a helmet when riding my bike?

Wearing a helmet is not required by law, but it is a good idea. If you're involved in an accident while riding your bike a helmet will help to protect you from serious injury.

What are the proper hand signals to use when riding a bike?

If you are making a left turn, extend your left arm straight out. When making a right turn, extend your left arm and bend it at the elbow so your hand is straight up. If you are going to slow down or stop, extend your left arm bent at the elbow with your hand straight down.

How many people can ride a bike at one time?

Bicycles follow the one person-one seat rule. If you have one seat on your bike, there should only be one person on it at a time.

Is it legal to ride with no hands on the handle bar?

No. According to state law, you must have at least one hand on the handle bar at all times. You can't carry any objects with you on your bike that require both hands to hold on to.

Can I ride my bike at night?

Yes, but you must have a light and reflectors on your bike if you do. You should also wear bright colored clothing so that drivers of cars can see you more easily.

Should I lock my bike when I'm not with it?

We suggest that you do lock your bike to prevent someone from either stealing it or mistaking it for their own. If you have a lock on your bike and have it registered, the chances of it being stolen and not recovered is lowered significantly.

How often should I check the equipment on my bike?

We suggest that parents check over their child's bike each spring to make sure everything is in working order. It is a good idea to check the brakes before you ride each time.
If something is not working on your bike, don't ride it until the problem is fixed.
